The Maldives Archipelago

::15 April 2010 :: :: featured, Maldives 2 Comments

The Maldives is an archipelago comprising 1,190 low-lying coral islands scattered across the equator, in groups of 26 naturally occurring atolls which are divided into 20 for administrative purposes.

The atolls of Maldives are part of a greater structure known as the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge, which stretches over 2000 kilometres. The islands of Maldives are very low lying with the highest point at approximately 8 feet above sea level. ‘Faru’ or ring-shaped reef structures form the atolls and these provide natural defence against wind and wave action, on the delicate Maldives islands.

An indication of the perfection of Maldives atoll structure is the fact that the word ‘atoll’ in the English Language – meaning ‘ring-shaped coral reef enclosing a lagoon’, is a borrowing from the Maldivian language ‘Dhivehi’.

Of the more than 1900 tropical islands that make the paradise that is Maldives, only about 200 are inhabited. Of the remaining islands about a 98 have been developed into exotic resort islands that offer tourists their own hideaway – hidden away from all the hectic hustle and bustle of city life.

The capital of Maldives – Malé, the hub of government and the centre of trade, commerce, business, health and education, is located in the middle of the atoll chain, a small island buzzing with the sounds and activities. It is estimated that more than 150,000 people which is more than one third of the population country’s population lives in this island. Malé is arguably the smallest urban capital in the whole world.

Maldives surfing Place

Maldivians have been surfing using planks for a long time. However, modern surfing came to the Maldives in the late 70s. In 1973 Tony Hinde an Australian surfer took a break from surfing in Sri Lanka and together with a friend set sail for the Africa. He was never to reach his destination. His ship seriously off course was shipwrecked on the shore breaks of Male’. Tony discovered the thrill of surfing on the Maldivian reefs. He changed his name to Tony Hussein Hinde, married a local lady, opened his own surf agency and decided to stay for good.

The recent O’Neil Deep Blue Contests held in the Maldives has placed Maldives firmly on the world’s surf map. While most of the recognized surf breaks are in Male’ Atoll, there is certainly more to be discovered. Some resorts provide boats (Dhonis) to transport surfers out beyond the breaks up to three times per day for two hour periods whereas charters offer surfers the chance to surf the reefs for longer periods.

At Surf Maldives you can discover the exotic surf breaks either cruising in a surf cruise or in a resort hotel.

Amazing Under Water

Yesterday, Ithaa, the world”s first all-glass under-sea restaurant at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island will celebrate its fifth anniversary. And to celebrate, the resort is offering guests the chance to spend the night under-water by turning the restaurant into an exclusive suite for two, complete with private champagne dinner and breakfast in bed.

Sitting five metres below the waves of the Indian Ocean, surrounded by a vibrant coral reef and encased in clear glass, the restaurant has hosted over 43,800 diners, 151 under-sea “Renewal of Love” ceremonies and been witness to the consumption of over 14,235 bottles of the “house wine” champagne since opening.

Using aquarium technology, “Ithaa” meaning “pearl” in the Maldivian language of Divehi, was built to allow guests to enjoy the colour, clarity and beauty of the Indian Ocean without getting their feet wet.

Ithaa consists of three five-metre wide x 125mm thick glass arches sitting one metre below the sea level during low tide and almost two metres at high tide, the widest constructed underwater structure in the world at the time of building. The inside of the restaurant is nine metres long and five metres wide and sits above the seabed.

Such a unique restaurant deserves a distinctive cuisine, which is why Ithaa is the first and only restaurant in the world to offer fusion Maldivian cuisine, taking local spices, seasonings and traditional cooking methods, but adding a western twist to create an innovative style of cooking.

Diners at Ithaa Undersea Restaurant experience a set-menu composed of 23 different dishes over four courses; from Reef Fish with grape, almond and saffron reduction to Maldivian Banana and Chilli Mascarpone cream with refreshing crushed basil. A three-course lunchtime menu is also offered.

World-renowned wine-makers and Chefs have also flocked to Ithaa to host numerous food and wine events with highlights including visits from Hubert de Billy from Pol Roger who will help celebrate the anniversary this month; Frederic Engerer of Chateau Latour and Chef Mathieu Pacau of acclaimed Paris restaurant L”Ambroisie.

Scuba Diving

Maldives with amazing coral reefs and wide variety of marine life, it is one of the best dive destinations in the world. Almost all holiday resort islands run well equipped diving centres with excellent instructors who are qualified to offer variety of dives, dive courses etc… The schools in resorts offer “introductory courses”, three lessons that show what it’s like to dive in moderate, crystal clear waters off iridescent reefs surrounded by schools of fish.

Enthusiastic divers a cruise boat exclusively for diving will give the best of the diver world. The whole Maldives has several top dive sites some of them are exclusively for diving.

For beginners obtain a professional qualification like the PADI Open Water Course, which enables the holder to obtain air tanks and dive anywhere in the world, takes about twelve dives, along with a written and practical examination.

Different dives offered by operators.

Reef Dives

Reef edges, where it slopes into deep water are the most interesting part of a reef to dive. Outer reef slopes, where the atoll meets the open sea, often have interesting terraces, over-hangs and caves, and visited by pelagic (open-sea fish).

Visibility is usually good, but surf and currents can make for a demanding dive, inner reef slopes, in the sheltered waters inside an atoll, are generally easier dives and feature coral formations and numerous smaller reef fish.

Kandus

A kandu is channel between islands or reefs on the outer edge of an atoll, or a channel between atolls. Kandu is suitable for drift dives. The current also provides an environment in which attractive soft corals thrive. Water inside an atoll is a breeding ground for plankton, and where this water flows out through a kandu into the open sea.

The rich supply of plankton attracts large fish such as manta rays and whale sharks.

Thillas

A thilla is a coral formation that rises steeply from the atoll floor and reaches to within five to 15m of the water surface – often it’s a spectacular underwater mountain which divers fly around like birds.

The top of a thilla can be rich in reef fish and hard coral, while the steep sides often have crannies, cave and overhangs which provide shelter for many small fish, while larger fish come in turn to feed the smaller fish.

Wrecks

While many ships have foundered on Maldivian reefs over the centuries, there are few accessible wrecks with historical interest. Those which have historical interest requires permission from the government to dive. The driveable wrecks are mostly outside the atolls. They are interesting for the coral and other marine life which colonises the wrecks.

And Other place you can get Very beautiful island and also have beautiful coral for scuba diving at Harbour Village. just to Caribbean Vacations.
